Introduction to Bayesian Inference

June 2, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm UTC-4

Host: Noam Siegelman, Haskins Laboratories

Date: June 2, 2020

Time: 12pm – 1pm Eastern Time (GMT -4)

Can Bayesian inference serve as an alternative to classical statistical methods based on Null Hypothesis Significance Testing (NHST)? This virtual office hour will serve as a brief introduction to this exciting alternative analytical approach. We will go over basic concepts such as prior and posterior distributions, review the conceptual differences between Bayesian inference and NHST, and discuss the relation between Bayesian parameter estimation and Bayesian model selection via Bayes Factors. The meeting will include active demonstrations using JASP (“the Bayesian SPSS”): Please install the software before the meeting: https://jasp-stats.org/.

Questions for this Office Hour may also be submitted beforehand: Open Office Hours Q&A

How to access: Open Office Hours are delivered using Zoom. Meetings are password protected, so participants will need to enter a password in order to join an Open Office Hour. Meeting rooms and passwords will be sent by email to those who have provided contact information for that purpose.
